Reviews About “The Tin Roof Blowdown” by “James Lee Burke”

The Tin Roof Blowdown is James Lee Burke’s 20th book featuring detective Dave Robicheaux, but it stands alone. Set in 1940s-era New Orleans, a time when colored musicians were compelled to play in isolated clubs and whites-only venues such as Preservation Hall, it features a jazz funeral, brutal violence, and plenty of racial slurs. Like many of Burke’s books, however, it has an upbeat ending. It also contains an analysis of what happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina that reads like a prophecy. The main character reflects on why he never left New Orleans despite all its problems: It was my home. I felt safe there. I still do. And I’ll be damned if anybody will run me out of town. That sums up how most people feel about their hometowns.
